Thirteen years ago, Visitacion Valley Middle School (VVMS) had the highest absentee, highest suspension, and highest teacher turnover rate, and the lowest academic achievement rate in the district. Five years ago, James Dierke--principal of VVMS--introduced Transcendental Meditation to his 6th and 7th grade students. Teachers were trained in Transcendental Meditation. At two separate times, for 15 minutes, students practice "Quiet Time" during the school day. The results of the meditation implementation were staggering: attendance rates improved 98.3%, VVMS went from one of the highest suspending schools to one of the lowest, 20% of 8th graders were accepted into Lowell High School, one of the top performing high schools in the United States. After the success of "Quiet Time," the program expanded to 3 additional schools. Since 2005, the David Lynch Foundation has shared Transcendental Meditation with our most stressed populations. Long Story Short Media (LSS) worked with the David Lynch Foundation and VVMS to produce this powerful, inspiring, video.
